FORT SMITH, Ark. – This month’s Stroke Support Group meeting at Baptist Health-Fort Smith will focus on the risk of seizures and epilepsy following a stroke.
A seizure is a temporary disruption of electrical activity in the brain that can lead to a variety of symptoms, including changes in cognition, loss of consciousness, and convulsions. Epilepsy, on the other hand, is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Seizures following a stroke often result from brain damage that interferes with normal electrical signals between brain cells.
Jamie Gibson, a neurodiagnostic technician in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at Baptist Health-Fort Smith, will lead the discussion. She will provide valuable insights on the prevalence of seizures after a stroke, how to recognize their signs, and how to ensure safety during a seizure episode. The meeting will take place on Friday, March 14, at 9 a.m. in the Baptist Health Classroom, located on the first floor of Baptist Health-Fort Smith, 1001 Towson Ave. These meetings are open to everyone in the community.
