THE BEST OF CARE
The birth of an infant is a beautiful and most often joyous occasion.
There are, however, times when newborns need more specialized care
to ensure that they have every opportunity to begin a healthy life.
BAPTIST HEALTH Medical Center-Little Rock provides a level three, 40-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that is equipped with innovative, cutting edge technological services, as well as a skilled staff of neonatal physicians, nurses and support personnel. Our specially trained staff have the skills and the experience to assure that your baby will receive the best possible care and attention. All our Registered Nurses and Respiratory Therapists are certified in the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Our team provides family-centered patient care and a commitment to patient satisfaction.
DEVELOPMENTAL
CARE
Our neonatal staff are trained in Developmental Care that is designed
to optimize the NICU environment and care giving practices. Developmental
Care ensures the best outcomes for your baby by controlling temperature,
light, sound and positioning. Treatments are planned according to
your baby's ability to tolerate stress. Research has shown that
Developmental Care contributes to improved outcomes such as fewer
complications and shorter lengths of stay.
We actively promote appropriate infant stimulation and family-centered care through Kangaroo Care, non-nutritive sucking and twin to twin bedding while limiting environmental stimulation.
NEONATAL TRANSPORT TEAM
The
Neonatal Transport Team is available 24 hours a day and will travel
by ground transportation or BAPTIST HEALTH Medflight helicopter
to any hospital in the state. It is staffed with a transport nurse
and respiratory therapist who work under the direction of one of
four board-certified Neonatologists. Recognizing the needs of your
critically ill baby, our goal is to leave within 15 minutes of receiving
the request for transfer.
FAMILY ACCOMMODATIONS
The NICU team recognizes and fully appreciates the importance of
family visits for you and your baby. Our desire is to reunite the
family as quickly as possible. For this reason, we are the first
hospital in the state to provide individual private rooms for your
baby and larger rooms designed for twins or triplets. Because many
of our babies are transported from around the state by our Neonatal
Transport Team, we have included accommodations for families. Our
family waiting room is adjacent to the NICU and will provide a comfortable
place for parents to rest when they are not with their baby. We
also have parent rooms for those parents who need a place to sleep
and a place to "room in" with their baby before discharge.
INFORMATION AND SUPPORT
Parents of our NICU babies are kept well informed through regular
updates from our neonatologists and nursing staff. We also provide
a toll-free number, 1-800-332-4415, for parents living out of town
to call and check on their baby's condition.
We provide parents an educational handbook with topics that help them with their baby's hospital stay and the transition home. Parents are offered the opportunity to learn infant CPR, infant massage and Cues & Clues classes. WIC certification is also available if needed before discharge.
We provide a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach to caring for your babies through Physical Therapy, Social Services, Lactation Consultants, Dietitian and Pastoral Care Services.
INFANT
MASSAGE
Our certified Infant Massage Therapists will work with each family
to design a program of Positive Touch Therapy including hand containment
and Kangaroo Care. Infant Massage has been shown to be very beneficial
to long term development.
MULTIPLE BIRTHS
Thanks to a new concept in the care of pre-term multiple births,
BAPTIST HEALTH now gives newborns the opportunity to spend time
together in the same bed each day. The reassuring closeness of the
other infants results in improved feeding and increased weight gain,
fewer heart rate fluctuations, and a shorter hospital stay. It's
good for the newborns . . . and for mom and dad, too.
