BAPTIST HEALTH Rehabilitation Institute's Coma Management Program is designed specifically for those brain injury survivors in Rancho Los Amigos Cognitive Levels I thru III or those who respond to stimuli in a very limited nature. The program includes support via the physician, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, therapeutic recreation, dietary support, and respiratory therapy. Prior to admission the family is advised that their involvement in the program is required as family education comprises more than 50% of the therapeutic activities.
Cognitive or thinking improvements are facilitated through a specific type of therapy designed for these patients called "sensory stimulation." This therapy incorporates all types of sensory input including taste, smell, hearing, vision & tactile sensations. Family instruction in the principles of sensory stimulation therapy is critical for enhancing continued improvement following discharge.
