Stroke Treatment
The interdisciplinary team is comprised of highly qualified professionals with expertise in stroke rehabilitation. Care is directed by the Physiatrist who specializes in rehabilitation medicine. Treatment programs are individualized according to the patient's needs and may include specialists in rehabilitation nursing, occupational and physical therapy, speech-language pathology, recreation therapy and medical social work. Patients who have had a stroke may receive specific training in mobility, self-care, speech, and swallowing.
Stroke Education
Patients and their families will receive educational instruction in many important areas to help facilitate the return to a functional lifestyle. Each patient will receive a comprehensive manual about stroke rehabilitation that includes information about understanding the medical, physical and emotional effects of stroke. Educational topics discussed during the inpatient stay may include: Community reintegration, the availability and use of adaptive equipment, equipment maintenance, community resources and orthotics.
Discharge Planning
Discharge planning begins for you and your family with admission to the rehabilitation center. We know that patient's rehabilitation needs to not end with discharge from the Rehabilitation Center. To ensure continued improvement some patients may continue therapy through home health or outpatient services. The social worker will assist with needed arrangements. Patient and families may also find it beneficial to participate in the Baptist Health Rehabilitation - Stroke Support Group. This group meets the third Thursday of every month from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the rehabilitation center dining room.
Patient Outcomes
Stroke patients can vary greatly in the severity and impairments of their stroke. However on average a stroke patient admitted to BHRC-NLR is discharged after 18 days. 73% of our patients were discharged to home.
Referral
Referrals can be made by a physician, family member, friend or self-referral. A screening examination will be conducted prior to admission. The cost of treatment is covered as hospitalization by Medicare, and most private insurance carriers.
